Color: Camouflage

From October onwards it is dark before you leave work. The dog still needs walking, the bins still need taking out, the run still needs doing, and all of it now happens in the dark.

You already own a headlamp. You also already know why it is in a drawer: the strap has to be cinched down hard to stop the lamp bouncing, and forty minutes of that gives you a band of pressure across the forehead and a headache behind the eyes. And on a cold night you have to choose between the hat and the headlamp, because they do not go on the same head comfortably.

Why putting the light in a beanie solves it

A headlamp has one job and one problem: it has to stay still, and the only way it can is tension. All the weight hangs off a narrow strip of elastic, so the pressure concentrates in two places on your skull.

A beanie is already held on by the shape of your head. It does not need to be tight. So the weight of a five-LED module — a few grams — spreads across the whole band rather than pressing into two points. The result is a light you forget you are wearing, which is the only kind you will actually keep using.

Why light at your eyes beats light in your hand

There is a real optical reason hands-free light at the brow line is better, and it is not just about having your hands free.

Every object you light up casts a shadow directly away from the light source. So the position of the light decides where the shadows land relative to your eye.

Hold a torch at waist height and the light comes from well below your eyes. Every shadow it throws is cast upward and sideways — into your line of sight. You end up looking at a scene full of dark patches you cannot see into, which is why a handheld torch makes uneven ground look flat and hides the kerb, the root and the pothole.

Put the light at your brow line, and the beam travels along almost exactly the same axis your eyes are looking down. Every shadow is cast directly behind the object that made it — hidden by the object itself. From where you are standing, the scene looks evenly lit with almost no visible shadow at all.

That is why head-mounted light makes close detail work so much easier. The light is coming from your point of view, so nothing you are looking at can shadow itself. Under a car bonnet, inside a cupboard, at a tent peg, on a dark trail — you are not working around shadows, because from your position there effectively aren't any.

And it follows your gaze automatically. Look at something and it is lit, with no hand involved and no re-aiming.

The detail that makes it last past one winter

The light module lifts out.

That one feature is the difference between a gimmick and a hat you own for years. Most light-up beanies have the electronics sewn in, which means you can never wash them — and a hat worn on sweaty runs and cold walks gets grim fast. Pull this module out and it is an ordinary beanie that goes in the wash.

It also means you get two products: a warm acrylic knit hat you can wear anywhere without a light on your head, and a light when you want one.

  • Reversible, so it wears either way round
  • Stretches to fit roughly 14 to 24 inch head circumference — children through to adults, which is why one size genuinely works here
  • Around 12 hours of light per set of batteries
  • Four colours, including high-visibility orange and red for being seen on a road, and camouflage and grey for not being seen when that is the point

Why it is one of the easiest gifts to get right

It fits a very specific and very common person: the one who is outside in the dark and cold anyway. Dog owners. Early-morning runners. Tradesmen and mechanics working under something. Fishermen. Anyone who shovels a driveway or walks to a car park at 6pm in January.

It is useful rather than decorative, it costs nothing to run, and it is the kind of thing people are glad to receive but would never think to buy themselves — which is the whole definition of a good gift.

How to use

  1. Slide the light module into the pocket at the front of the band.
  2. Press the button on the module to switch the LEDs on and off.
  3. Take the module out before washing the hat.

Worth knowing before you buy

The light runs on two CR2032 coin batteries rather than a rechargeable cell. That is a genuine trade-off: nothing to charge and it never dies in storage, but keep a spare pair in a pocket if you use it heavily. Coin cells are cheap and sold everywhere.

LED beanie hat lighting a path on an early walk

Warm Head, Hands Free Light

A torch means one hand is always busy, and a head strap means something extra to carry. This puts the beam in the band of a hat you were going to wear anyway, pointing exactly where you are looking.

What Comes in the Box

The beanie arrives with its removable light module fitted and a charging cable. Michiaelio ships it free.

Removing the light module from the LED beanie

Pop the Light Out to Wash It

Charge the module, slide it into the front band, and press the button to cycle brightness. Slide it back out before the hat goes anywhere near water.

Frequently Asked Questions

How bright is it?
Bright enough to light a path in front of you or the inside of a dark cupboard. It is a practical close range light rather than a long distance beam.
Can I wash the hat?
Yes, once the light module is removed. Take it out first, then hand wash the knit and let it dry flat.
How long does a charge last?
Several outings on the lower settings, less on full brightness. Charging it once a week suits most dog walkers and early runners.
Is it warm enough for winter?
It is a proper knitted beanie rather than a thin novelty hat, so it does the warmth job on its own before the light comes into it.
Can other people tell there is a light in it?
Switched off it looks like an ordinary beanie, since the module sits flat inside the band rather than bulging out.
How long does shipping take?
Orders arrive within 7-20 days. Shipping is free on every order, and you will receive tracking by email as soon as your order is dispatched.

The flashlight doesn't hold up well ☹️.

S

The hat in orange color is very bright. The fabric is quite thick, so it will be warm when used in moderate cold. The flashlight is removable, so you can safely wash it. The only thing I don't like is the lack of ability to charge the flashlight or replace its battery. It is not dismountable and there is no such possibility.
