You have watched this happen at the pool. The goggles leak after two lengths, so the child stops, stands up, tips the water out and puts them back on. Then they fog, so they are swimming half blind. Then they come off and there is a red ring pressed into the skin around each eye that is still there an hour later.

After a few sessions of that, a kid does not want to put their face in the water at all — and the lesson you are paying for stops working.

Why kids' goggles leak, and what actually stops it

Almost everyone fixes a leak by tightening the strap. That is the wrong fix, and it is why the red rings happen.

A goggle seals because the gasket conforms to the shape of the face and traps a pocket of air — the strap only holds it in place. When the silicone is cheap and stiff, it cannot deform to fit, so the only way to close the gap is to crush it against the face with strap tension. That hurts, it marks the skin, and it still leaks the moment the child squints or smiles.

What is actually holding the goggles on — and it is not the strap

Here is the test that proves it, and it is worth doing before you ever get in the water.

Press the lenses onto a dry face with the strap hanging loose, squeeze gently, and let go. They should stay put on their own for a moment. If they do, the fit is right. If they fall straight off, no amount of strap tension will fix it.

The reason is simple. Pressing the cup against the face pushes some air out from inside it. When you release, the soft silicone tries to spring back to its original shape, which would make the space inside bigger — but no air can get back in, because the rim is sealed against skin. So the pressure inside drops slightly below the pressure outside, and the surrounding air holds the goggle onto the face.

Once you are in the water, that gets stronger rather than weaker. Water pressure rises with depth and presses on the outside of the cup from every direction, pushing the rim more firmly into the skin the deeper the child goes. A correctly fitted goggle seals itself tighter underwater.

Which means the strap's only real job is to stop the goggles being knocked off by a dive or a splash. It was never supposed to be creating the seal.

And that is why soft silicone is the whole product. Only a gasket flexible enough to mould to the dips and curves of a particular child's face can make that airtight rim in the first place. Stiff silicone leaves tiny gaps, the pressure equalises, the suction never forms — and the only thing left to try is tightening the strap, which is where the red rings and the complaining come from.

Why they don't fog — and the one thing that ruins it

Fog is condensation. A child's face is warm, the pool is cooler, and water vapour inside the lens condenses into thousands of tiny droplets that scatter light.

The anti-fog coating is hydrophilic — it attracts water rather than repelling it. Instead of beading into droplets, the condensation spreads into a single thin transparent film. The water is still there; it just stops breaking up the light. That is why a coated lens stays clear while an uncoated one goes milky.

Here is the part that matters most, and almost nobody tells you: that coating is a microscopically thin layer on the inside of the lens, and wiping it removes it permanently. Every pair of goggles that "stopped working after a month" was rubbed with a finger or a towel. Rinse and air dry, never wipe the inside, and the coating lasts the life of the goggles.

  • UV protective coating on the lens, which matters for outdoor pools, lakes and holidays
  • Wide view lenses, so a child can see sideways — helpful for confidence and for keeping track of them
  • Ear plugs included, so water stays out of the ears too — the other common reason children refuse to go under
  • Three colourways, and letting a child pick the colour is a bigger factor in whether they wear them than any spec on this page
  • Ages 3 to 16, so one product covers a first swimming lesson through to secondary school

Why they make sense as a gift

Swimming kit is one of the few things a child will genuinely use week after week, and goggles are the piece parents most often put off replacing. Pair them with a towel or a swim bag for a birthday, a start-of-summer present, or the first week of lessons.

How to fit them

  1. Hold the lenses against the eye sockets and pull the strap over the back of the head.
  2. Adjust the strap so the seal is snug but not tight. If it leaves deep marks, it is too tight.
  3. Fit the ear plugs before getting in the water.

Care and tips

Rinse in cool water after swimming and let them air dry out of direct sun. Do not use hot water — it warps the silicone and ruins the seal. Never wipe the inside of the lenses with fingers or a towel, as that removes the anti fog and UV coating for good.

Swim goggles resting on the edge of a pool

Clear Eyes, Longer Swims

Fogged lenses and a strap that pinches are the two things that end a swim early. Anti fog coating keeps the view clear underwater, and the soft silicone seals hold without leaving marks.

What Comes in the Box

The goggles arrive ready to wear with their case for the swim bag. Michiaelio ships them free.

Set the Strap Once

Adjust the strap so the seals sit flat around the eyes without being pulled tight. A good seal comes from placement rather than tension, and it should hold from there on.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ages do they fit?
They are made for children roughly 3 to 16, with a strap and flexible seals that adjust across that range as faces change shape.
How do I stop them fogging?
The coating does most of the work, and it lasts longest if you rinse them in clean water after each swim and avoid rubbing the inside of the lenses.
What if they leak?
Usually the strap is too tight rather than too loose, which distorts the seal. Loosen it slightly, reseat the cups over the eye sockets and try again.
Can they be used outdoors?
Yes. The UV protective coating suits outdoor pools and holidays as well as indoor lessons.
How should they be stored?
Rinse, air dry and keep them in the case rather than loose in a bag. Pressure on the lenses is what causes scratches and a lost seal.
How long does shipping take?
Orders arrive within 7-20 days. Shipping is free on every order, and you will receive tracking by email as soon as your order is dispatched.
